A Writer’s Journey – The One Habit That Changed My Life

A Writer's Journey | TSC Blog Banner

We often struggle to self-express our feelings and emotions and hold them in fear of being judged or misunderstood. One of the safest ways of self-expression is diary writing, where we can plainly and candidly express our thoughts, feelings, and emotions.

Dairy writing or journaling fosters voicing opinions and eventually improves our writing skills. My journey as a writer thrived from putting my voice and feelings in a diary and asking to publish in different portals. It honed my writing skills and gave me a unique style to express myself and thought flow to become a writer eventually.

Habits Are Formed When You Are Involved

In the physical world, we encounter many hardships, challenges, and stress. Our mind often gets riddled with questions and problems, and finding solutions becomes difficult with a preoccupied mind. It leads us to disappointment and discontent. Decluttering our thoughts and unnecessary worries becomes hard as we may not find the right person to share.

Expressing thoughts and worries through writing acts as therapy. Expressive writing helps reduce stress and anxiety and lets out our intense emotions. As a mechanism, writing a diary helps us to cope with and adjust to hardships, freedom, and challenges.

Diary or Notebook Writing

Our diary or notebook becomes a significant part of us. And gradually, our daily routine. Dairy offers an unrestricted space to pen down minor incidents, feelings, different human emotions, thoughts on people we meet, and daily challenges. It makes us feel better and relaxed.

I initiated writing as an alternate task that gradually became a daily routine, as I loved to repeat it and do it often. The Ancient rule of 21 days states that if we repeat an activity for 21 days continuously. It gets installed as a habit. Therefore, Dairy became a private space for me to share my day-to-day happenings, unexpressed emotions, meetings, and my thoughts about people, nature, adventure, personal goals, and many more.

Writing Needs Nourishment

Writing consistently on a daily basis helps develop a unique writing style. Even though we initiate the writing casually on day-to-day things and experiences, it helps create a thought flow on things. Our thoughts have a natural flow and rhythm, and following the pattern of thoughts enables better writing. We need to capture our thoughts and introspect about their origin. The origin of our central thought becomes the main premise of the story.

Whether it is creative or academic writing, our ideas (even though strong) can not explain or speak for themselves. We need to elaborate on the subjects in a long form. For example, we can illustrate our points with specific examples, describe the subject’s qualities or elements in concrete language, or expand our points clearly and in straightforward terms. Narration, cause & effect, and compare & contrast are a few other strategies for elaboration.

Reading Others’ Works

Also, reading other’ works and paying attention to their structure, word choice, content structure, and material flow help streamline our writing. The more we read, the better inspirations we draw for writing and develop an eye to observe what makes a writing piece effective and the mistakes we should avoid.
